More 3D Movies coming to a theatre – gimmick?

Posted by Craig on January 25th, 2010 in Movies, Random

3d - A gimmick, or the next movie staple?

I’ve just read more rumours of upcoming movies that will be given the 3D treatment.

Gremlins 3 and Ghostbusters 3 are now expected to be filmed with the technology that has made the likes of Avatar a success, but is this all a gimmick?

Blu-ray titles are already being produced in the third dimension, mainly kiddie features such as Coraline, but the current technologies used in the cinema today that use lenticular lenses rather than the red/green projections will be available to the next generation of blu ray players (and if you are lucky enough to own systems that are firmware upgradeable, the better).

But is the whole 3D experience a gimmick? Toy Story 1 and 2 have been re-imagined and I watched the original to see how good it was, and I must admit, I really enjoyed it, but to be honest, I can take or leave the whole extra depth. No doubt, I will go and see the third instalment upon release, and yes, I will probably spend the extra bit of cash to watch it whilst wearing a pair of oversized glasses that will make me look like Buddy Holly, but when the time comes for me to own it on blu-ray (or whatever the next format will be), I don’t think I’ll be that bothered about sitting in my armchair with the free pair that came with the packaging.

It’s a great concept, but there was a media that thought of the whole 3D revolution years ago. It’s called theatre.

Apple press release – unveiling the tablet?

Posted by Craig on January 22nd, 2010 in Random

Apple announcement coming soon

The latest apple product will be announced next Wednesday, and I have a sneaky feeling that it will be related to the rumoured apple tablet .

As with the colour splodges on the press release, it may well be that we are seeing some kind of colour e-reader / tablet hybrid. There have been reports that several of the major UK newspapers have been approached to produce electronic equivalents of their material, so could this be for the next generation of e-readers? Apple have already revolutionised the music industry with itunes, maybe they will do the same for the written word too.

Rumours are also doing the rounds based on the next iphone 4.0 OS update and how multi touch and multi processing will be introduced.

It looks like we’ll have to wait until next Wednesday for the definitive answer.

Today has been uneventful. I missed the opportunity to take a photo of my car windscreen being replaced. So instead this is the view from my desk. Every single day….

Tron Legacy news

Posted by Craig on January 21st, 2010 in Movies

New light cycle

I’m looking forward to the new TronLegacy movie, which is a follow up of the movie Tron which was a revelutionary breakthrough in CGI, and as with most films lately, it will be in glorious 3D.

The technology used will be from the next generation of cameras used on James Cameron’s Avatar.

The MTV website has a full interview with director Joseph Kosinski. Click here to read the article

I saw this house on my way into work today. There’s a weird container on the wall with what looked like a flag inside. Anyone have any ideas as to what it is?

Star Wars coming in 3D?

Posted by Craig on January 20th, 2010 in Movies

star wars in 3d

Just read a post on the total film website that thanks to the technological advances in 3D made during Avatar, George Lucas now feels the time is right to go back (again) to the Star Wars movies and recreate them for the third dimension.

Hmm, more money lining the flannel shirt pockets? More than likely.

Your first time seeing a movie

Posted by Craig on January 20th, 2010 in Uncategorized

I sat and watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince again on Blu-Ray over Christmas, and it got me thinking about the first time you see a movie. Whether it be at the cinema or on TV. That “first” experience will never be repeated ever again. Granted, you can watch the same movie over and over but it won’t be the same as your own premiere.

The scary bits that make you jump, the funny bits that make you laugh out loud or the hearty parts that have you in tears. These emotions are for a one time event for that time.

The experience too cannot be repeated. The past few movies I have seen seem to include other background noise emanating from the theatre – usually some inconsiderate git continually talking or, for the last visit, a child in the front row crying. I ask you, why go to the cinema to not watch a movie. Anyway, I am digressing. The point of this post is to just say that the first experience of any film that you have cannot be duplicated. Your emotions are set to that point in time.

This has probably also influenced whether or not a film was as enjoyable the first time around as opposed to seeing it again on TV. Seeing a comedy in a half filled theatre doesn’t seem as funny without the fully responsive audience reactions. I’ve seen the same select comedies more than once in a cinema, and have had mixed reactions to the film, sometimes the second viewing funnier than the first based on the audience in the room. Other comedies, I still find funny when sitting at home (one being Home Alone 2 with young Macauly Culkin throwing bricks off Marv’s head. It cracks me up now).

So, the next time you see a movie, savour the experience because it’ll never be the same again….

I see this every day on my way in to work. It’s Joseph Darby and most of the time the locals dress him up. This time he is donning a wooly hat and a Villa top.

I’ll never eat a creme egg again!

Posted by Craig on January 19th, 2010 in Random

It looks like it’s the end of an era for yet another British institution.

Cadbury’s is the next to be part of a takeover from rival confectionary company Kraft.

According to the BBC website, “The Cadbury board will advise its shareholders to accept a new offer of 840 pence a share – valuing the company at £11.5bn ($18.9bn).”

As many others, I have grownup eating and loving Cadbury chocolates, from Cirly Wurly to Wispa, and even though it may taste and look the same, it on’t be the same again.

Bye bye Cadbury.

See the BBC for more on this story.
